Hi, I am looking forward to spending a lot of time sailing on the ocean in the coming years, exploring both under and on top of the water. I am looking for opportunities to sail longer distances, both along coastal routes and ocean crossings, initially in and around Australia/SE Asia/Pacific, and later in Europe/Med and the Americas/Carribean.
I have owned and skippered a 40 foot power boat for a number of years, and have crewed on a sailing boat in local waters for the last 5 years to build my sailing skills. I have also undertaken some slightly longer voyages - sailing around the Whitsundays and taking a ~400nm round trip to the Abrolhos Island on a motor boat for a couple of weeks with some mates. I loved it all and want to do a lot more.
I am semi-retired, fit and healthy person who likes to keep fit - running, cycling, hiking, skiing and scuba diving. I have tried surfing and kitesurfing and would like to get better at both, and would also like to learn freediving. My wife and I do a lot of travel together, although she is less keen on long ocean voyages and more likely to meet me at the other end in sight of land.
I am a decent cook (I make great sourdough bread!) and am happy to help on board doing whatever is required. I enjoy catching, cleaning and eating fish and most seafood. Having owned a power boat I have learned a bit about maintenance of boat systems, but am definitely not a boat mechanic. I have sailed in local club races and worked most positions including main sheet, foredeck/spinnaker and jib, but would not say I am an experienced sailor by any stretch. I intend to undertake some sail training qualifications over the next year.
I'm a pretty relaxed, sociable person and am looking forward to having fun exploring and adventuring. At the same time I understand the importance of safety and vigilance on the ocean, understanding that there will be challenging times along the way and being keen to work through them.
