Team

Team status
Just me, I'm not bringing any crewmates

Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Hello! I'm Captain Doug, a USCG Master Captain (25-ton, Near Coastal) with power, sail, and towing endorsements. I’m ASA Instructor certified (201, 203, 204), with extensive experience operating both sailboats and powerboats throughout the southern U.S. East Coast and beyond.

I bring a calm, professional approach to maritime operations, supported by a background in high-tech environments. Prior to my maritime career, I served as Chief Engineer at a major Aerospace manufacturer, where I led complex projects in aviation safety, development, and performance. This experience sharpens my focus on risk management, mechanical systems, and crew safety.

On the water, I’ve captained day sails, multi-day trips, and private charters, offering guests everything from relaxed coastal cruising to hands-on adventure sailing. I also spent time as a SCUBA instructor, leading dive trips across the U.S. and Caribbean—always emphasizing planning, clear communication, and safety.

Currently based near Savannah, Georgia, I’m available for captain or crew roles along the southeastern U.S. coast and open to seasonal, delivery, or private charter work in the locations listed on my profile. If you're looking for a dependable, experienced mariner who values professionalism and safety, I'd love to be part of your next voyage.

Fair winds,
Captain Doug

Hello! I’m Captain Doug — a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master Captain, lifelong adventurer, and professional mariner with a background that combines leadership, technical expertise, and a passion for life at sea.

I hold a USCG Master Captain License (25-ton, Near Coastal) with power, sail, and towing endorsements. I’m also ASA certified (Basic Keelboat, Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Cruising), and have hands-on experience operating both sailboats and powerboats along the U.S. East Coast, especially the Georgia and South Carolina coastline, as well as the Gulf of Mexico near Siesta Key, Florida.

Before transitioning to maritime life, I spent over three decades in the aviation industry, working with a major aircraft manufacturer. My final role was as a Chief Engineer, where I led cross-functional teams through high-stakes safety and performance programs, including aircraft reliability, development, accident investigation, and fleet improvement initiatives. My background in aviation has given me a deep-rooted commitment to operational safety, clear communication, and precision under pressure—skills I bring to every maritime role I take on.

Sailing Experience
I’ve captained vessels for day sails, overnight trips, and small private charters focused on coastal cruising, wildlife exploration, and relaxing on the water. My sailing experience is concentrated in:

The Southeastern U.S. Coast, especially from Savannah, GA through the Lowcountry and into the Carolinas

Florida’s Gulf Coast, particularly near Siesta Key, where I’ve spent time navigating its inlets, shallows, and open water as well as the US and British Virgin islands.

Varied inshore and near-coastal passages, handling sail and power, with a strong emphasis on guest comfort and vessel management

While ASA certified, I’ve focused more on mentorship-based instruction rather than formal classroom teaching. I enjoy working with new sailors or curious guests, helping them gain confidence through direct experience, with a focus on safety and seamanship.

My Background & Strengths
My work in aviation engineering wasn’t just technical—it was personal. I was trusted to lead teams solving complex problems where human lives were involved. That mindset carries over to the helm. I approach every voyage with:

A deep respect for risk management and preparedness

Calm decision-making under pressure

Professional leadership grounded in real-world experience

I also worked for several years as a SCUBA instructor, leading trips across the U.S. and Caribbean. That role sharpened my ability to guide people through new, high-sensory experiences while prioritizing safety and enjoyment.

Personal Interests & Lifestyle
I’ve designed my life around the outdoors. When I’m not sailing or crewing, I’m hiking, camping, mountain biking, or painting. I’m also a visual artist, creating traditional and digital artwork inspired by the sea, wilderness, and fantasy. My art is featured in gallery collections and sold through online stores and boutiques—often worn on t-shirts or displayed in homes.

I enjoy living minimally and meaningfully—spending as much time in nature as possible, whether under sail or on the trail. I’m passionate about self-reliance, exploration, and good conversation.

My Plans & Availability
I’m currently based near Savannah, Georgia, where I relief captain a local day sail charter offering 2-hour sails, sunset cruises, and beach excursions. That said, I’m flexible and open to new opportunities throughout the southeastern U.S., Gulf Coast, and other locations listed in my profile.

I'm available for:

Coastal deliveries or repositioning trips

Private or charter captain roles

Seasonal crewing or relief captain work

Hands-on sailing mentorship or experience-building charters

Adventure-based or eco-tourism-focused trips

Whether you're moving a vessel, planning a charter, or need someone to lead a professional operation with skill and personality—I’m open to a conversation.

Work Style & Philosophy
I’m calm, focused, and collaborative. I take pride in maintaining high standards while ensuring guests and crew feel at ease. Safety is my first priority, always—but I also believe in enjoying the journey.

I thrive in situations where problem-solving, flexibility, and mutual respect are key. I’m as comfortable hosting first-time guests as I am coordinating with seasoned mariners or vessel owners.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little more about me. I’m excited to find the right opportunity to contribute my experience, energy, and seamanship to a great boat and an even better crew.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Doug

My motivation and reasons to crew on a boat

visit remote placesseek adventurefulfill a dreamcareer changeearn moneytravel

I’m drawn to the water because it offers the perfect balance of purpose, challenge, and peace. After three decades in high-level engineering roles, I’ve shifted my life toward what truly energizes me—being outdoors, working with my hands, solving real-time problems, and sharing meaningful experiences with others.

Crewing or captaining on a boat allows me to use my skills in navigation, safety, and communication in an environment I love. I enjoy the camaraderie of life at sea, the constant learning that sailing demands, and the satisfaction of working as part of a capable, focused team.

I’m motivated by the opportunity to contribute to well-run voyages—whether helping deliver a vessel, supporting a charter operation, or providing mentorship to newer sailors. For me, it's about professionalism, adventure, and staying connected to nature, people, and purpose.
