I am primarily seeking a long voyage between July 1 and September. I'm also interested in daysailing out of New York City at any time. I have lots experience as crew and some experience as skipper.
For the longer voyage, I'd be happy to make my way most anywhere on the east coast to meet you, or you can come pick me up in NYC. There's also a chance I'll be in Europe anyway, so if I send you a wave & you're there, that's why. Besides the pleasure of a long voyage, I'm also looking for mentorship out of this trip. Teacher–student relationships are the best, and while I have experience, I have a lot to learn — I'm looking for a very experienced sailor to deepen my understanding. I'm especially looking to get more experience in heavy weather.
I lived aboard during my undergraduate studies in Victoria, Canada, on a beautiful old Catalina 27 whom I miss dearly. There we did mostly daysailing with a couple overnighters. When I bought her I had no experience, but my good friend was an experienced sailor & taught me the ropes. Now I live in NYC, doing a PhD and teaching in philosophy at NYU, & I've joined a sailing club out of Pier 5 in Brooklyn. Here, after a few years' break, I've gotten my sea legs back, & I'm confident I could contribute well to all kinds of crew.
Besides sailing & philosophy, I have (too) many hobbies & projects, many of which could add to our trips. I've become something of a film photographer, shooting an old Zeiss and a new(er) Minox. I fancy myself able to document what a moment felt like -- if you'd like to have some keepsakes, I'm your man.
I'm a bit poor in languages — I basically just speak English, though I can fake speaking French in a pinch. But I am an excellent mime! Sailing with someone I don't share a language with is a challenge I'd be interested in.
