Dear Shipmates

Introduction

I am 64 years old, married with Saly and we have four married children and two grandchildren. I was born in Belgium and I have been living in Brazil since 1970, having also adopted the Brazilian nationality.
I am a rugby player, scrum half and captain of Pasteur Rugby in São Paulo. I coached the junior team and I played in the Brazilian national team. Most of my temper was shaped by the values of rugby and other sports like running marathons, swimming, surfing, hiking and golf.
I have been sailing since I was 12. I am certified as Master of Yacht 200 ton 150 NM by International Yacht Training and Amateur Captain (up to 20 metres, all seas) by the Brazilian Navy. I have sailed (with races) in Brazil, Uruguay, Greece and the West Indies, as a crew member and skipper.
My whole family has grown up, my career as a manager is coming to an end and I want to sail.

I understand that experience, connections, networking, accomplishments and success are a strength and a strong safety net. I am grateful to my wife, my family, my friends, my coaches, my employersm and my clients. You gave me strength and confidence to build who I am and put me in a known zone. But it could be a trap. I want to test myself, to feel uncomfortable, to be out of the confort zone, to feel fear, to be challenged, to learn again and more, to know new people, new cultures, new countries. I want to gain more experience and so, to teach an old dog new tricks. I wish to share experience and, why not, to teach a young dog old tricks!
The plan is to buy a sailboat and live aboard some years, to sail in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic.

My motivation and reasons to crew on a boat

share experiencevisit remote placesseek adventurefulfill a dreamface challengescareer changeearn moneygain experience

My favorite quote for rugby is from Jean-Pierre Rives (French rugbyman): “Rugby is the story of a ball with friends around and when there is no more ball, there are still friends”. Its all about team spirit and play.
And after years of sailing and so many NM shared with friends, the quote can be re-written: “Sailing is a story of a sailboat with mates and when she is not, there are still mates and friends”.
The values of rugby are Respect, Discipline, Solidarity, Integrity, and Passion. They are also true for sailing. Respect for the sea and the other boats, Discipline on safety, cleaning and maintenance routines, Solidarity as, loyalty and camaraderie between crew mates and with all crews, Integrity through clear and good seamanship, and Passion as enthusiasm to be part of very special kind of people united by the sea, the wind and mother nature.
There are three kinds of men: the living, the dead, and those at sea (said Aristotle)
