I would like to make the run to or from New England down to South America. I would also like to make an extended run in the Pacific island chain. I have lots of experience on the water and feel most at home in or on the water.
I am an avid scuba diver and have cleaned hulls with the best of them. I was a divemaster and an assistant instructor for NAUI in the past but have not taught in a long time. I fish, snorkel, spearfish, just about anything on the water. I do have a sense of humor, sometimes.
I spent my youth mostly on inland lakes in Texas (some are big) but we also made many trips into the Gulf of Mexico, for deep sea fish mostly around the oil rigs. I have had 16-21 foot motor and sail boats since I was a teen and can fix inboard and outboard engines, including pulling them out and putting them back in. Capable with fiberglass work and repairs to boa t hulls. I have not worked much on diesel engines except to do some very basic things.
I was in the USCG as a Radioman for years, and yes I did get an honorable discharge and have the paperwork. But it has been a long time so my seamanship needs some extended exposure to get back up to a proficient level. I am a hands-on learner, at least that is my preferred way to learn. I do have a BS in physics and in mathematics, so I can learn from books but its so much more fun to learn on the job.
Now onto what you care about, my sailing experience. Solo sailing experience does not go much further than a Sunfish but have had the sunfish on large lakes and in the Atlantic off the North East coast. I have spent weeks at sea sailing but was not in charge of much except night watch (anchor watch) and my turn at cooking. Recently I have been spending time on a 40 foot catamaran down around St Thomas and St John. We have a condo on St Thomas and sail every chance we go down if we are able. Again, I am not the captain of the vessel, but I make a very good first mate according to the captain.
