Dear Shipmates, once you have salt in your veins it is so hard to stay away. Many years ago I started yacht racing as crew, with a culmination of being on the winning yacht in the inaugural Fremantle to Darwin “Splash” ocean race, comprising 6 legs and covering several thousand nautical miles in some horrendous weather. Having bloodied myself, in 2006 I bought my catamaran in Grenada, Caribbean and spent two years cruising around those wonderful islands. Then a refit to ensure total independence of shore facilities, and sailed across the Atlantic via Bermuda and the Azores to Portugal. Then 5 more wonderful years full time cruising all the Mediterranean. But circumstances changed and I had to sell my wonderful yacht. But I still yearn for a good breeze on a stern quarter and have the yacht lift as it races ahead. That and swapping yarns from others who have done far more than I.

I have University Degrees in Engineering and also Accounting. I did well in professional life but decided to get out of the “race” early. I have been “retired” since 1994 and have spent the interim years travelling everywhere. I have owned 4 motor homes travelling Australia for 2 years, the USA for 2 years and Mexico for a year. I love the independent life and “have marched to the sound of a different drum”. I don’t travel in groups but backpack with a one way flight ticket to somewhere on the planet. Some trips I have taken have lasted 9 months. Sailing gave me great joy. The power and awe of standing on the stern of my yacht on a starry night thousands of miles from land and watching the white crest of waves some 40’ above is etched fondly in my memory. And the sea serves up conditions or situations that were new for you at the time, so now I have the experience and confidence to handle most awkward circumstances that cruisers come across. By choice I preferred to remain out at anchor rather than go into a marina as my yacht was totally independent. Just two of us onboard with the ability to take a swim anytime and always be pointing into the wind. Marinas were used for the winter and this yielded great company over those colder European months. I still have my Musto wet weather sail gear and the right experience, fitness, pleasant demeanor, sense of humour and attitude to become your extra crew hand.

My last relationship of 9 years has ended amiably as my lady and myself go our own ways. We spent 2 years at sea together and 7 more years based from the USA. I have been away from the full time ocean life for 7 years, but would like to return to the sea and sail back to Australia.
