Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Raised in a family that valued the exploration of other cultures, world cuisine and social intercourse. A wide range of intellectual interests, a farm to table lifestyle and extensive entertaining were supported in the Greek Revival farm house I grew up in. Sailing and voyaging in traditionally rigged vessels has given me exposure to diverse peoples, cultures and lands. Love the natural world whether that be sailing, bicycling, hiking or enjoying culinary delights alfresco with family and friends in Florida or the beautiful Finger Lakes where I own land. Prefer visual art such as film, sculpture, painting, architecture, gardens and dance. I have been known to friends as loyal, playful, inquisitive, considerate, dedicated and a good cook. An interest in sensory exploration led to international recognition as a sommelier and being knighted in Belgium. A predilection for voyaging led me to spend significant time in Scandinavia, British Isles, Germany, Northern Europe, The Mediterranean, Aegean, Adriatic and Caribbean. Scandinavia, Hallertau, Sud Tirol, Italy are palaces I’m interested to share with others. Enjoy slow paced long distance bicycle trips, especially events organized for classic bicycles. I’ve worked as a museum interpreter, historic preservation specialist and in the gourmet food and beverage industry. My main career has been as Navigation Officer in the Merchant Marine. Current interest is to travel back to many favorite places in my own sailboat a classic ocean racer designed by Alan Gurney in 1967. Completing a refit with the target being departure from Florida for the Grenadines end of February. Does any of that sound interesting to you?

About the boat, the plans, and current crew

fairly crampedusually cleanshare experiencefulfill a dreammulticultural

The boat is an Alan Gurney ocean racer design from 1967. My vessel was Gurney’s design number 37 and rather conservative being transitional from full keel to fin keel with full skeg hung rudder. Interior is classic ocean racer with nearly no stowage below, 27-29” wide quarter berths or pilot berths and a fully varnished teak and mahogany interior with very limited tankage. Accommodations are beautiful yet spartan. In contrast Gurney’s best known design number 35 WINDWARD PASSAGE was a radical rocket ship design. Nearly no similarities in design between the two vessels. The original owner had her built by Huisman and waited one year for them to start the build. IOR was instituted nine months later so the vessel spent most of her life as a day sailor for wealthy owners who were hands off people. In 2013 she was part of an estate and was not as well cared for as optimal. Hull keel to rail has been media blasted, barrier coated, faired and painted. Fairing above the waterline is excellent. Have been scrubbing bilges, prepping engine, changing out sheeves/ pins etc. and doing a minor refit while vessel was repainted. Target is Florida to Grenadines mid February through April.
