Itineraries

  • An itinerary is a route divided into legs showing the planned locations and dates of the main stopovers from the start (S) (initial departure) to the finish (F) (final arrival), which is the destination of the vessel's journey (also called voyage, trip, torn, or expedition).

Each leg has a departure and an arrival date and location. It may also have additional waypoints in between, which might be stopping points or course change points.

Accuracy of itineraries

Itineraries for vessels at sea are never precise! We use three accuracy levels for the planning status to avoid confusion about what is likely to happen or not:

  • Pending (not accurate) – initial idea, possibilities
  • Preliminary (kinda accurate) – changes may still apply
  • Planned (reasonably accurate) – this is what's meant to happen
Days vs Nights

The duration of an itinerary is counted in days (start to end date) and the leg in nights (departure to arrival date). That is because you may arrive on a Monday and leave on a Tuesday. Therefore, there can be confusion if you were there for one or two days, but it would strictly count as one night without any confusion.

Therefore, you would say you went on a 14-day holiday or trip (the itinerary) and spent 13 nights on all your legs combined, for example.

Planning vs Estimates

There is also an important distinction between planning (what's the intention) and estimating (what's calculated). A time of arrival is always an estimate as a calculation is required; that's why it is called ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).

You can't plan to leave San Francisco and arrive in Hawaii 10 minutes later, regardless of how desperate your intention is. If you intend to arrive in Hawaii by a certain date and estimate 10 days for the journey, then you can plan to leave San Francisco 12 to 15 days before. Therefore, your departure date is planned (what's the intention), and the arrival is still an estimate (what's calculated based on season, winds, currents, and many other factors). Plans can change due to weather, government requirements, breakdowns, delays, etc.

Tips for planning an itinerary

The following tips are worth noting to manage your itinerary and maintain an excellent overview:

  1. Name your itinerary with a short and clear title, such as 2025 Antarctic Expedition or 2025 Italy Family Cruise, that is descriptive, easy to remember, and simple to refer to in conversations.
  2. You can set your itinerary's visibility to private while planning it, share it with only those you contact, or share it with anyone who views your profile.
  3. Next, add each leg of the significant stopovers by date and location.
  4. Then, keep updating each leg as required.

Be realistic and mindful when planning an itinerary. People will arrange their timing and life around it, taking time off work, booking flights, arranging accommodation, etc. It's crucial to let the crew know how accurate they can expect the itinerary to be.

Dear Shipmates

Introduction

Hi there beautiful people,
I am Kate, skipper and right hand to my Capitan Mat.

We bought our first catamaran 1 year ago in Netherland and sailed down to Spain during last winter. After finishing the first wave of boat jobs, we sailed down to Portugal and here we are now off to begin a second wave of boat jobs in Algarve.

So, during the winter months, we will be mostly anchoring here in the Algarve and start our second season of jobs on boat. There are 3 lovely spots to be. Alvor, Formosa, Guadiana. We will probably spend winter in each of one a bit.
Therefore we are not offering any sailing in up coming months and we only will enjoy our home on calm waters, protected from waves and strong winds, working around. Sailing rarely and occasionally from one river to the other.

We are happy to welcome short term crew to share life aboard – but also look forward to forming lasting relations for some exciting undertaking in the future, such as passages to Madeira, cruising the Canaries and ultimately an Atlantic crossing in the upcoming years :) If you're looking for a partner at sea, let's get in touch!

If you'd like to get to know us & read some of our nomadic life stories in our newsletter or want to check out our webpage to discover the full vision of our project, let us know. We are happy to share it with you!

Talk to you soon and fair winds to those who sail :)

About the boat, the plans, and current crew

usually cleancomfortablevery safelive on little moneyhave a holidayshare experienceseek adventurefulfill a dreamlive off the grid

Our Apache 41 is a catamaran with 4 cabins, where we can host up to 8 beautiful people. Each cabin comes with its own sink, space to store personal things and retreat for a rest. The boat has a fully equipped kitchen, where we like to experiment: baking our sourdough bread, prepare all kind of (fish) dishes or process whatever the surroundings have to offer in the current season. The sinks have 3 taps: fresh, drinking and salt water. The saloon provides little oil heater called Antarctic for colder days (now not in use, as the temperatures rise), desk & sofa and library, which will host you with interesting books of sailing topics but also exciting novels. We like to make music and therefore there is guitar on board and saucepans to drum :). Shared bathroom with shower (outdoor solar shower available as well) and toilet with everything to satisfy minimalistic hygiene needs.
Two water tanks (120l each) and a rainwater collection system allow us to live and cruise off-grid for extended periods of time.

Deck is roomy and gives enough space to comfortably move around, do yoga or just enjoy sunrises. Relax in cockpit or discover surroundings of our current stay. Back aft you'll find a wooden deck area, forward there are two nets to chill (or sleep in on warm dry night :) and plenty of space in between.

Our cat is for now equipped with 2 diesel engines of 27hp which in future could be replaced for electric engines- yes we would like to have our blue surroundings nice clean. We are cruisers – and therefoer not the fastest. In nautical speed we talk about an average speed of approx. 5 knots.
By installing a Victron based solar system (1300Wp/660Ah) we are super happy to be independent in terms of electricity – in fact we produce enough to run a electric water kettle (and might soon start to also cook electrically :)

We provides some sailing clothing for passages (will be best if you have your own), epirb, life vests. Boat is equipped with fire extinguishers.
Cat is accompanied with a dinghy, propelled by oars or by an electric outboard.

Our lovely lady is 51 years old this year, and one should be expecting all but no shiny fancy boat. But we love her and she loves us, because we work every day to make it a nicer and cosier place to live :)
In this sense, it's the perfect boat for those who want not only to sail and discover but also learn about boat work, maintenance and DIY re-fit & upgrades.

What is expected of the crew

clean & tidyfriendlyorganisedrespectfulconfident swimmergood communicatortravel light (little luggage)eager to learn & workLGBTIQA+ respectfulopen mindedsense of humorcan pay own expensesenjoy cookingdon't mind cleaninggood with maintenancecan follow orders

The boat can be confidently managed single-handed if needed.
However, we invite our crew to participate (in the daily duties, adventures and also sailing maneuvers) and look forward to learn & grow together!
Voluntary engagement & consensual decision-making are our preferred way of organization. Every day while having breakfast we discuss the plans for the day/upcoming days and coordinate.

Curiosity and attentive learning are more important to us than a lot of previous experiences!
A positive, constructive and supportive attitude is the spirit we actively cultivate on board.
