I’m a physically fit 83-year-old enthusiastic male who sails the Caribbean from November to May and—I've been told many times—do not fit my age in mind or body. And since the crew's civil status is requested on FAC, I'll also provide mine: widowed.

I like to escape the winter weather in the Pacific Northwest of Washington and continue my love of sailboat cruising. I’ve been sailing off and on for many years and am ready to continue after having upgraded and prepared my latest boat for further adventures—next sailing the Leeward Islands.

I usually single-hand the boat but enjoy having a crew companion to share the experience when the timing works out—a buddy to sail with. If this sounds interesting to you, let me know, and we'll see what might be possible.

My 39’ Lagoon 400 is an owner’s version with two full-bed cabins and a shared head on the port side. My cabin, head, and workshop/storage are starboard. The salon and cockpit are very comfortable for a joint living space. It's a safe and efficient boat for sailing and a great place to live at anchor.

This season's cruise started in Grenada, in November 2024. After launching from storage in mid-November, I took a week or so to check everything out, then headed to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. After that, I sailed back up the Windwards north, checking out the islands as I went, and will store the boat ashore in Antigua at the beginning of May 2025.

Next season, 2025-26, will start in Antigua and head north up the Leeward Islands, ending somewhere in the Virgin Islands/Puerto Rico. Exactly where I go and when, all depends on the weather and what my crew and I want to see and do, given what we experience along the way.

My goals in order of priority are: to stay warm, have a safe and comfortable boat to live on, find some adventures along the way, and enjoy sailing the pleasures of the Caribbean. Consequently, I'm basically in no hurry to get anywhere but follow the dictates of weather and sea, desires of the heart, and necessities of boat maintenance!

As you can see, my plan has lots of flexibility—and not much plan, as such. Part of that flexibility depends on who I have aboard. You may fit in for a month or longer at various points during my journey, depending on your timing requirements and how we fit together to share the experience. In any case, I’d like it to be a great experience of friendship for a short time, at the least, or preferably, cruising together over a longer time. The goal is to have a delightful journey regardless of the length of time together.

I look forward to having good conversations, time for quiet thinking, memorable adventures, and learning more about our world. That's my idea of what cruising is all about.

Some sailing experience is required—I’m a patient teacher willing to add to your skills. Experience aboard boats and the comfortable ease of being aboard for a length of time is required. Let me know in some detail what your experience is, even though it may be sometime in the past.

I like to snorkel and SCUBA dive whenever desirable, so at least snorkeling ability and interest are needed; SCUBA certification also would be good. I like to get ashore daily, if possible, for walks to help keep fit. I also do early morning exercises. Being and keeping fit is important to me and expected for crewing aboard since the goal is to share adventures aboard, ashore, and in/under the water.

Likewise, we share the daily cooking and maintenance tasks of living aboard and the expenses for food and consumables—boat operation expenses are mine. In general, I expect an interest in exploring what each island offers, be it strolling through city or village street life, hiking into the realms of nature ashore, or exploring the sea. I’m a curious person and would like my crew companion to be one as well.
