Position Summary:

The Summer Sailing Instructors are responsible for delivering excellent instruction and guidance in the sailing program. This includes delivering an appropriate curriculum, ensuring that all activities are carried out in compliance with established policies and regulations, and creating educational and instructional programs that uphold the program's high standards.

The Sailing Instructors have the responsibility to provide quality instruction and leadership in the youth sailing and summer camp program.

Duties & Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
• Ensure all programs are conducted in accordance with the procedures and policies set by the organisation, emphasizing safety.
• Development of necessary skills to ensure the quality of the program.
• Assume duties of Beachmaster, Lifeguard, Sailing Instructor, and minor Boat Maintenance when assigned.
• Participate in training week as scheduled and instructed by the Sail Director and Summer Camp Director.
• Drive company boats and vehicles for program purposes when assigned after a check-out process.
• Assist with camper arrival/departure procedures as assigned on arrival and departure days.
• Provide and/or attend evening programs and activities when necessary or assigned.
• Generate ongoing enthusiasm and participation in summer camp activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Sail Director.

Examples of Responsibilities/Supportive Functions:
• Must be able to communicate and work with campers by teaching all aspects of sailing, including proper sailing techniques and proper safe boating practices.
• Have the knowledge to teach sailing on many different types of vessels, such as Lasers, 420’s, and catamarans.
• Have the knowledge to be self-sufficient while teaching students on a sailing vessel without auxiliary power up to 2 miles offshore for up to 3 hours periods.
• Must be physically fit in order to perform strenuous activity for extended periods.
• Ability to launch and land boats weighing up to 450 pounds in and out of the water and across soft sand with the help of others.
• Ability to drive a support boat (tiller-steer and center console) during sailing classes after a training and check-out process. Ability to safely approach and assist small sail vessels.
• Ability to perform simple boat maintenance projects and demonstrate the proper use of tools.
• Greet incoming campers at the pier and help move luggage.
• Lift, carry, and move heavy objects when necessary.
• Be able to respond to emergency situations by utilizing Waterfront Lifeguard training and providing the leadership necessary to enact the Emergency Action Plan.
• Ability to observe student and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and manage camper behavior.

Qualifications / Minimum Qualifications
• Must have a current driver's license.
• Must be confident in and around the ocean.
• Must be a strong swimmer.
• Must have prior sailing and boating experience (in instruction preferred).
• Have a creative mindset in order to develop ways to teach sailing to multiple different types of learning styles in a • comprehensive and cohesive manner.
• Must be a strong swimmer.
• Physically fit in order to sail on multiple different types of vessels, paddle both boards and canoes and perform strenuous activity for extended periods.
• Must be able to pass the Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding Course, including First Aid and CPR (provided by us during training).
• Desire and ability to live and work in a remote camp community.
• Desire to work with children and the ability to supervise them.
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
• Good character, integrity, flexibility, and adaptability.
• Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position successfully.

The employee member is subject to environmental conditions found working indoors/outdoors. The employee member is frequently subject to extreme heat, with temperatures up to 100 degrees while moving around in and outside of camp. The employee will spend the majority of their time in, on or around the ocean. The employee member is frequently subject to loud noise when working in or around the camp. The employee member is subject to hazards which include proximity to moving mechanical parts, vehicles and other equipment like, sharp objects, and exposure to cleaning chemicals, fiberglass and animals. Other hazards may include slick floors and hot stoves, cookware, plateware or glassware. The employee member is occasionally subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, or dusts.
