Dear Shipmates

Introduction

How should I persuade you to take a seventy year old on board? For one thing I should be brief, but you'll have to skim--it's what I do.

When I was... younger, I was a commercial mariner. I grew up sailing a 78' gaff-headed Alden schooner and was her captain for a couple of years. I was deckhand for many many deliveries, of new tugboats from LI NY down to the ABC's, Panama, Trinidad, the Persian Gulf, of yachts, power and sail, everywhere and anywhere. But all this was a very long time ago, when things were very different. We navigated by stars, had no contact with the beach, took the weather as it came, arrived in harbors as distant strangers. I have stories, needless to say, but it's hard to communicate just how vast and untamed the world was then. It was for me at least another state of mind and being.

I was an auto mechanic, a tree surgeon, what else? Somewhere I have a masters plumbers license from Rhode Island. I got a degree and had had a busy practice as a private tutor in Manhattan, put three daughters through school and college while my own students came and went. I taught to AP level physics, chemistry, biology, algebra, geometry, calculus, US history, European history, global history, art history, hateful econ 101, the SATs, French, Latin, Ancient Greek, I have faked my way and could still through just about any college course in the humanities. I know a lot about a great many things. From the way I talk, you'd think I was well-read. I've written five novels, came this close, but never published one. I can write a screenplay in a couple of weeks. I give great eulogies.

My last blue water passage was eleven years ago, I mention it only because we were caught in a fluke early-season hurricane and of the three boats that left Newport the same day we were the only one to survive.

I'm VERY useful on a boat. I love the weather. I love all hours. I love new people.

I didn't check "running away", but I was tempted. More like "running to". There's no box for "cheat death" but there ought to be. "Cook for people" is another I'd check, "Meet new people", "Talk.. or not", and above all, "Help out any way I can," and, believe me, I can.

I'm a woke lumpen leftie of modest means, but I pay my way.

One thing I didn't mention--I am a dedicated meditator, hours a day, somewhat by chance in the Tibetan Dzochen tradition. At this I would say I AM a professional and thereby an incidental student of east meets west philosophy. I can do it well on a boat, and the practice has led to some very interesting, I'd say useful, even helpful observations for those in need of warmth and solace.
